We are not suggesting that businesses stop using AI far from it. But as an agency that helps clients adopt these tools, we felt it was right to take some responsibility for that footprint rather than look past it.
Joining Stripe Climate and committing 1% of our revenue to carbon removal felt like a meaningful, practical step in the right direction.
What Stripe Climate Is and How It Works
Stripe Climate brings together thousands of businesses from around the world to collectively fund carbon removal technologies that are scientifically vetted and built for permanence. Working with Frontier, their in-house team of science and commercial experts, Stripe Climate identifies the most promising projects and purchases carbon removal on behalf of participating businesses.
Two of the projects currently in the portfolio give a good sense of what this work looks like in practice:
- Climeworks uses renewable geothermal energy to capture CO₂ directly from the air, then stores it permanently underground in basaltic rock formations. Their work has already resulted in hundreds of tons of CO₂ removed on behalf of Stripe Climate businesses.
- Charm Industrial converts biomass into bio-oil and injects it deep underground for long-term geologic storage. Stripe Climate was one of their earliest customers, and Charm has removed significant amounts of CO₂ on behalf of businesses in this coalition since its early days.
Both approaches focus on permanence: removing and storing carbon, not just offsetting it temporarily.
A Local Commitment With a Broader Purpose
The Madison and Sun Prairie area is home to many hardworking, community-minded businesses. As AI becomes a more common part of how those businesses operate and grow, it feels right to pair that progress with some accountability.
Carbon removal technology is still in its early stages, and costs will come down over time as more businesses support it, much like solar panels and other technologies did before. Early participants help make that happen, and we are glad to be among them.
